Burning energy off in the new snow!

Elizabeth received about 17.5 inches of snow last week! My mare, Lena, and my mom-in-law’s gelding, Jo, had fun kicking it up in the snow. That is, until Jo took a chunk out of Lena’s side and then their fun was over. Naughty boy!

Congratulations, NWSS competitors!

I’d like to say congratulations to all the NWSS competitors of 2012. The Stock Show wouldn’t be what it is without the hundreds of people that bring their livestock, competitive edge and enthusiasm to Denver every winter.

A lesson I learned as a new mom while attending the Stock Show last Saturday was I should’ve purchased children’s ear muffs. We had tickets for the 8 p.m. rodeo, and not only was it past Meira’s bedtime, the noise totally overwhelmed her. She did fabulous walking around, checking everything out, but after the fireworks (which she also handled beautifully), she was done. The noise of the crowd and the timer, combined with sleepiness, meant I spent most of the rodeo in the concourse soothing and pushing the stroller to keep her asleep. So, my husband had the chance to play with the Nikon.

I did get to see the barrel racers, and what a disappointing night they had! I don’t remember for sure, but I think only one or two ladies successfully completed the pattern. What a bummer! Those tricky barrels. I predicted a barrel down for one rider the moment she came in the arena; her horse was aimed so poorly there was no way she’d escape knocking it down. In fact, I’m surprised her horse didn’t jump it instead. But that happens! I’m sure next run she’ll give it a better shot.

Next big horse affair in Denver: The Rocky Mountain Horse Expo! Scheduled for March 9-11, 2012, it’s held at the NWSS complex.

January means Stock Show in Denver!

January in Denver means National Western Stock Show. Denver and Stock Show have been synonymous for years—since 1907, to be exact. That’s a lot of history!

I’ll be attending this Saturday, which will be my 25-week-old daughter’s very first NWSS. You can be sure I’ll be taking a lot of photos! Usually I’d go down to get photos of the horse shows, but having a baby changes everything, as they say, and having an infant certainly takes time away from one’s ability to photograph anything at anytime.

However, if you showed a horse at NWSS, and would like some fun, wintery images of him before he’s back to being a dirt-covered, long-haired horse, call me! I love to capture horses in the snow. Now, if only Colorado’s weather would cooperate!

Hello world!

Little Feather Equine Photography has been working in my mind for some time now, and I’m super excited to actually share it with the world and offer my services as an equine photographer.

While I was working for Appaloosa Journal, I had the opportunity to take photos of some pretty exciting events, including the World Championship Appaloosa Show, National Appaloosa Show, several different regional events, and the Chief Joseph Trail Ride.

I also got to do a photography seminar with Gabrielle Boiselle, and I learned so much from her! It’s very exciting to be able to put all that knowledge to use in my own way, and hopefully, this whole thing takes off.

Getting great images of horses is challenging, because they don’t play by normal rules. Many times, people find their horse photos full of distorted angles and proportions, or blurry. I hope to help solve that problem and help horse lovers get that perfect photo of their horse!

So if you own horses, know someone who owns horses, or otherwise need a photographer, please contact me at littlefeatherequine@gmail.com. And spread the word among your friends!
